Great Doctor in Cancun
I was visiting Cancun from California to propose to my girlfriend and celebrate the happy occasion together. On our third day there, I suffered a head injury while at the beach: Acute Sub-Dural Hematoma. I was taken to the hospital via ambulance, at which time I first met Dr. Raul Lopez Serna. I was under his care from November 11, 2016 until November 16, 2016. When I first arrived at the hospital, I was absolutely terrified. Not only was I in tremendous pain, but I was also in a foreign country and unsure as to the type of care and treatment I would receive. As an added stress, I am not nearly fluent enough in Spanish to adequately express what I was feeling and answer the questions asked of me sufficiently. The very moment I met Dr. Serna, an immense amount of this fear dissipated, as it was blatantly clear that he is a very well-educated and capable neurosurgeon. Moreover, he is entirely fluent in English, so the communication barrier was eradicated altogether. He very lucidly and succinctly described what had occurred, and took the time to detail what the next steps would be. He listened to all of my questions and concerns, and spent the necessary time to make sure I understood everything I needed to know with absolutely no feeling of being rushed in any shape or form. Not only did this remarkable doctor have to deal with his patient, but also with his patient’s worried mother, fiancé, and doctor friends back home who constantly asked for details regarding each and every one of Dr. Serna’s decisions. Not once did he lose his patience or demonstrate anything other than pure professionalism and genuine care. In addition to Dr. Serna’s very apparent expertise, education, knowledge, and proficiency, he also possesses something that many doctors do not—compassion. His sincere care for my well-being was very evident, and I could feel it deep within my heart. Once I was released from the hospital, Dr. Serna actually provided me with his mobile phone number so that I could contact him in the event I have any questions or if any unforeseen problems should arise. I have never witnessed this level of empathy with any other doctor in the past. In fact, even after I returned to California, Dr. Serna still did not hesitate to respond to my questions via text message. That is truly unprecedented and extraordinary, at least with respect to doctors whose care I have been under in the United States. The last time I saw Dr. Serna, we parted with a hug rather than a handshake. He also hugged my mom and gave her a kiss on the cheek goodbye as well, which further demonstrated what an absolutely incredible and kindhearted human being he is. Dr. Serna went well above and beyond the call of duty, and genuinely took care of me through this difficult period in my life. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely and wholeheartedly thank Dr. Serna for everything he has done for me. You are truly a gem, Dr. Serna. Thank you so very much. There is absolutely no way I could have gotten through this without you!
