Something about me
Mr Shortt qualified as an ophthalmologist in 2003 and since this time, he has built an expertise in managing complex cases of corneal disease, conjunctival disease, cataracts and laser eye surgery. As a clinician scientist as well a highly qualified surgeon, practicing at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, Mr Shortt works at the cutting edge of eye surgery where new techniques meet the clinic. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, an Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at London’s Moorfields Eye Hospital, and a Wellcome Trust Fellow and Clinician-Scientist, at University College London’s Institute of Ophthalmology.
In addition to his finely honed surgical skills, Mr Shortt has built his reputation on the strength and continuity of his patient care. Underpinning this success is his open and responsive approach to patient needs – he personally carries out all patient consultations, performs the necessary surgery and provides follow up care. He also welcomes the opportunity to personally answer any concerns his patients may have during their time in his care.
Mr Shortt specialises in corneal surgery, and receives many clients who require correctional work after developing problems after initial surgery elsewhere. His ability to deal with challenging cases is exemplified by his specialist interest and reputation for working with young people who have been the subject of gang-related violence. In these cases, acid or other toxic chemicals has been sprayed in the victims’ eyes in order to disable them. The injuries are devastating and severely damaging, resulting in pain, blindness and disfigurement, and are associated with profound psychological and personality effects.
One more thing about me: If I am not in clinic I will likely be found travelling in Europe with my wife and kids, preferably by bicycle. I have a passion for watching live sport and travel frequently to watch my soccer team, Chelsea FC, and my rugby team, Leinster Lions play throughout Europe. My favourite ‘work’ travel destinations are Miami and Chicago.
